Grand Geneva Say “I Do” Photo Contest – Kate & John – Grand Geneva to the Rescue

30 Jul, 2010

John and Kate were married at the Grand Geneva Resort on September 2, 2006.

Here is their story and photo submission for the Grand Geneva Say “I Do” Photo Contest.

John & Kate

John proposed a year to the day that we met (October 7th) and shortly after, we began planning our dream wedding!  Being an older couple (in our thirties and forties), this being a first marriage for both and knowing that we’d probably never make it to our 50th wedding anniversary, we really wanted to go all out and treat our family and friends from around the country to a full weekend of parties and festivities to celebrate!  Labor Day weekend seemed the perfect summer weekend to make that dream a reality!  We both love the movie, Sabrina, and took on the lofty task of trying to duplicate that type of venue for our wedding day!  We thought we had secured the perfect location, a mansion on Lake Michigan in Kenosha, WI!  Long after the “Save the Dates” had gone out and several of our guests had already booked their flights from all over the country, our venue suddenly let us know that they had made a booking error and that they could NOT accommodate us for Sept. 2nd.

In a moment of complete chaos we wondered, “How will we ever find another venue with so little time left (less than 5 months away), in the same area that can accommodate up to 250 guests on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend????  It seemed impossible and that our dreams of having a fabulous Sabrina-esque Wedding would be dashed.  Panicked, I called the Grand Geneva and to my great surprise, they just happened to have that date open!   I knew at that moment that this was meant to be!

From my very first meeting with our wedding coordinator, to our last, our expectations were absolutely surpassed by the service we received from the Grand Geneva Staff.  She completely understood our vision  and made it her mission to make that vision a reality!  From the beautiful outdoor ceremony which overlooked the gorgeous fountains, to the wonderful outdoor jazz cocktail party, to our fabulous carriage ride to our reception, we were just blown away!  And that was just the beginning!  We had the unique privilege of holding our reception outside where the ice skating rink is in the winter.  What a transformation!!!  I will never forget how it felt to come up to our wedding venue by horse drawn carriage only to see this amazing party under the stars!  All of our guests were already on the dance floor while the 11 piece big band played away!   Later, after an incredible dinner buffet, lots more dancing and an unforgettable fireworks display, I was able to surprise my groom with Culvers Cheeseburgers (Grand Geneva to the rescue again).  The party went on into the night and to this day so many of our guests (most of whom have been to many a fabulous party) say this is the best party they’ve ever been to.

Needless to say, I am SO glad that our first venue made that booking error and the Grand Geneva came to the rescue.  With the incredible service from the staff and the beautiful backdrop of the resort, we couldn’t have asked for a better wedding!  As we walked back to our suite that night we passed some other hotel guests who whispered that they wondered if we were celebrities because they had never seen anything like it!   Thanks to the efforts of the Grand Geneva, we definitely felt like celebrities that night and so did our guests!

Coming back to the Grand Geneva always feels a little like coming home.  As we approach our 4th anniversary, we would love to have the opportunity to come back home and relive all of the wonderful memories that we have of that day and also to revisit our friends that we have made at the hotel!  We hope you enjoy the attached memories of our amazing day!

How much fun this wedding was! My husband and I traveled from California to attend John and Kate’s wedding. We had escaped from our children for a long weekend and were so pleased with what a beautiful venue the Grand Geneva was. We were able to participate in Kate and John’s fabulous wedding, as well as enjoy the resort as a little get away. I hope John and Kate win- maybe Greg and I will join them to celebrate on their anniversary.
